I sat up blinkling my tired eyelids, which were heavy with exhaustion. I was confused for a moment. Where was I? Then I remembered. Yesterday, my cousins, mom, sister, aunt and I had travelled many, many miles to come here to Lake Chelan. Lake Chelan is a lake 52 miles long, and for a few days it would be our vacation spot.
Suddenly, with a jolt, I realized today was my birthday. I prodded my cousin who was asleep in bed next to me. "Wake up, Jawahar", I hissed through clenched teeth, so that my family would not hear me. But Jawahar snored on. I rolled my eyes and hissed louder "Today is my birthday!" Jawahar just rolled over and murmured something. I sighed and headed to the living room in search of my book.
I tiptoed around the cots and found my book on a shelf. As I was reaching for it, I heard a tired voice say, "Happy Birthday, Anaya". I spun around cluching my book, to face a figure in the doorway. "Good morning, Madhu Masi", I said cheerily. Madhu Masi yawned and stretched. "Not much of a morning, is it?", she said glancing at the early dawn sky. "Excited?" "Yeah", I admitted happily. She glanced at her watch. "How about you get some more sleep", she said. "Okay", I replied. She nodded seriously. I headed back to the bed before I heard her grumble, "these metal beds you don't get a wink of sleep". Stifling a giggle, I ran to my bed and threw myself face first into its comforter. I snuggled up and closed my eyes as sleep washed over me.
I opened my eyes. As soon as I saw broad daylight, I shot up as a bullet. My first impulse was to jump on the bed and yell into sleeping Jawahar's ears. But thankfully for Jawahar, he was yawning and stirring. I nudged him and his eyes shot open. "Whossup?", Jawahar said rather blurry. "I'm up", I yelled in his ear. He immediately sat up. " Happy Birthday", he said with a smile. "Let's go force Aisha to give me my birthday present she has been bragging about for weeks", I said to him. He plopped back onto his pillow. "Nope, not for me.", he said with a mouthful of comforter. I threw my pillow at him and raced out of the room to wake Aisha up.
I ran to the living room and jumped on Aisha and my other cousin Jahnvi. They were lying on their cots. Jawahar and I got the bed 'cause we both have dust allergies.
I squashed them with my ginormus body, forcing them to end their "sweet" dreams. Aisha and Jahnvi sat up, eyes wide. Aisha narrowed her eyes playfully when she saw me. Jahnvi dove under the blanket and started attacking my feet. I groaned, pretending I was in pain. Aisha just lay there and closed her eyes. I pinched her. "Don't fall off to sleep", I said "I want to see my present". Suddenly she shot up. "I forgot!" Aisha yelled and ran out of the living room. Jahnvi and we looked at each other, then raced after her.
Jawahar was sitting up, his grin growing as he watched Aisha unpack the present from our suitcase. He must have heard the commotion, I reasoned. We all sat on my bed except Aisha, who rummaged frantically in the suitcase's contents. "Stuffed animals, another stuffed animal, a whistle, a pack of chips, cards", Aisha muttered, naming each thing that she found in the suitcase. "Ah-ha! Here it is!" She pulled out something wrapped in a frilly, pink scarf. "Sorry", I didn't have any wrapping paper", Aisha said apologetically. "Don't worry I wasn't expecting it", I assured her. Muscles tight with anticipation, I pulled off the scarf to expose shiny, bright cardboard.
"Wow!", I exclaimed, practically shouting, "Pokemon cards!" Jawahar and Jahnvi both yelled, "OPEN IT!" With my fingers trembling, I peeled off the plastic covering and ripped open the cardboard. I shuffled through the pack of cards eagerly. "Wait, let me get my cards", said Jawahar, jumping up and running out of the room. "Me too!" said Jahnvi, running after Jawahar. "We can all trade!"
They came back and we all traded cards, even Aisha who had a huge deck. We traded for 10-15 minutes, before I heard a noise. I immediately jumped up, and almost knocked the cards off my lap. "I'm going to go check it out", I told them, and ran to the living room. There I saw my mom making plans for the day. "First, we will play on the beach and then eat out, then play on the play structure", my mom was saying to herself. I grinned.
We are going to have a blast, I thought happily, as I raced to the bedroom, a real blast.

The joy of jogging with Mom
"Thump, thump", went the sound of my sneakers. "Clomp, Clomp", went the sound of my mom's sneakers.
I jogged across the cold, hard, and black pavement with my mom, her curly hair bouncing. Strong breezes pierced our two bobbing backs but we did not slow down. "You are doing great", mom panted . Her brown eyes shining with admiration. I smiled.
A huge hill sloped within view. I sucked in my breath and prepared myself as mom told me patiently, "okay Anaya, you are going to have to go slow now that this hill is coming up." I slowed down a bit, as cool crisp grass brushed my active ankles. Birds flew across the sapphire skies. I closed my eyes drinking in the still silence. Before I knew it I reached the top of the shady hill, emerald leaves brushed tufts of my black bunched up hair. "I don't feel tired at all", I told mom excitedly. A delightful smile creeped up her damp face, the sun illuminating every faint line on her forehead. "Then lets keep going", she responded with a grin.
We jogged down the hill. I knew if we went any faster I would get tired immediately. The noon sun beat down on our faces while the cold wind howled against our freezing ears. We kept going. When we got to the end of the sloping hill, an intersection awaited us. Jogging in place we waited for all the cars to stop. I thought about our destination, West Street and how it would feel to reach there finally. All of a sudden the walk sign flashed white and we crossed without hesitation.
Mom had told me to jog with her, I thought determinedly, and I wont let her down by stopping now! Thoughts kept arriving in my head as we continued our jogging journey to West Street. I saw white, blue, and green houses as I jogged quietly with mom down the dark pavement side, the cars whizzing by noisily on the tar road. The sound of fire crackling and the smell of barbeque as we passed by a house. Lucky, I thought jealously, they are having a cookout.
The pavement began the sloping downward, and mom and I continued at a faster pace. And there it was! West Street was the very next street over. "We are almost there", mom said beaming at me. My legs started to ache as I urged myself to the West Street sign. And we were there!
Mom and I stretched our sore legs. Our smiles huge as cars whizzed on the road. "How far did we go?", I asked mom. "I'd say about a mile", she responded. "A MILE?", I gasped, my eyes wide. "Yes, a mile", mom said proudly. I felt happy as mom and I started to continue back home.
I am the luckiest kid in the whole wide world, I thought while mom and I made our way back home. The air was crisp and cool, and the birds were chirping happily.
I am the luckiest kid in the world, I thought again, as we pounded against the sidewalk briskly, to have such a fabulous mom.

An Autumn Morning
The sun shone faintly on the still treetops.
Orange leaves glinted in the light, turning them to flame.
Leaves were scattered across the green seas of dew-covered grass.
The wind was cold and fresh, and it frolicked about, flying over fields of grass littered with leaves.
A river swirled, snaking its way downhill.
Shimmering, rainbow fish leaped and wriggled, sending ripples across the still, blue water.
Snow-white clouds flew happily across the aqua sky.
Slowly, the clouds began to darken.
Rain pelted down, as if the murky heavens began to weep. Thunder boomed, sending the ear-splitting noise bellowing across the valley.
Forked lightning flashed across the bluish-black sky, stabbing the ground.
Slowly, but steadily, the storm began to subside.
The sky turned its brightest shade of blue, and the clouds faint, wispy white became an overpowering, shiny pearl .
The leaves danced merrily in the cool, autumn breeze, and all was peaceful once again.

Waking up
Sunlight steamed through the smudged window. My eyelids opened with great effort, and I blinked sleepily at my blurry surroundings. Yawning, my arm groped for my glasses on the windowsill. I finally felt the dirty frames of my glasses, and the second I put them on, all things around me had a sharper image and had a less blurry outline.
I hid under my warm green bed covers, lazily closing my drooping eyelids and letting out a sigh of content. But the silence was did not last for long, The cracked door flew open, and my grandmother walked briskly inside. She shook me and shouted in my ear " Wake up! It's 7:30"! Me, oblivious to her angry cries, stayed right in bed.
She took my limp arm and pulled me out of bed. I fell to the floor dazed. The freezing floor was a shock to my warm body, and I jumped to my feet. " Now, go to the bathroom and brush your teeth"!, she demanded looming over me with her arms crossed. I obeyed clumsily, staggering to the bathroom.
I can't wait for the weekend, I thought angrily, brushing my teeth vigorously with absolutely no enthusiasm at all, I just can't wait.

I do not know what to write
What should I write? You tell me. Thinking of a topic is not as easy as it can be.
Sure I love to write! I do not deny. But I cannot write if I cannot explain to the reader the who's, what's, where's, and why's.
If people force me to do this, my writing turns out just a twist!
But if I write for fun, which is not easy, my writing really turns out to please me!

The reed forest
A robin flutters by, crimson splashed on its chest. Liquid black eyes eyed the emerald trees warily, as branches skimming over its velvet head, gliding on the light breeze. Rabbits sprint on the desolate ground, ears cocked, snowy belly heaving. Deer prance on the flat moorland, their antlers raised up proudly. Ducklings totter by, briskly guided by their mother.
Suddenly a battle cry shatters the silence. Animals pause, their eyes filled with fear. A wolf leaps into the scene, tongue lolling. Sleek black fur plastered the thin body. Its silver haired companion scrambled beside him. The black wolf gestured to the silver wolf, and together, they spring back into the shadows.
A long pause follows before peace was restored to the forest once more.
